On the fringe of Sydney’s CBD, UTS’ city campus faces significant space constraints. UTS Central establishes a new vertical typology which connects the city with the university.
The podium incorporates spaces both within the library and informal ‘commons’ areas distributed across levels. Facing Alumni Green is a dramatic three-storey Reading Room forming part of the Library. Referencing traditional academic reading rooms while creating a highly transparent and contemporary space, it is washed with daylight tempered by operable sun control systems. Break out areas, including winter gardens and shaded terraces expand the range of settings accessible from the library, encouraging outdoor use.
