Comments

This Library is a vibrant, exciting destination with a relaxed welcoming atmosphere for all age groups. The design vision was to encourage social networking and facilitate collaborative learning and working; a process carried out in a partnership between PTW Architects and a Council/Library project team. The design focuses on technology to complement the existing services and extensive collection in Lane Cove and Greenwich which exceed the state averages. The design result includes: – Flexible study, meeting and conference rooms/spaces – audiovisual capabilities – Film & Sound Studio – Digital & physical exhibition spaces – Technology resources – Hublets, 3D-printer, STEM Collection, specialist software, iPads and laptops. – Collaboration spaces, acoustic nooks, study spaces – Children’s area – Play & Learn – Popular print/audiovisual collections – Access friendly environment – wheelchair access, hearing loops, braille signage, dementia kits. – Mobile low height shelving/Paperback/DVD stands – Leisure seating – Multiple access points for Mobile devices – Games Library Key design elements were informed by best practice in the region. The plan created a connected, fluid, open and textural approach. A schematic zoning plan was developed – this highlighted the entry/service zones, Collaboration/Open Learning zones, Meeting zone, quiet lounge zone and visual connection/incorporating glazing design work. The final design incorporates curved walls, coloured carpet zones, textural use of wood and fabrics, a variety of seating options, multiple digital walls for artwork and presentations, look and feel of openness – floor to ceiling glass panels for rooms/Library entry, the use of natural light/artificial skylights, acoustic panelling, whiteboards incorporated into walls/acoustic nooks, reflected ceiling feature that flows through the space connecting the areas. Using a mixture of spaces with a focus on technology savvy spaces ensures this modern welcoming design has flexibility for now and in the future.
