The new library was designed to be incorporated within the Mills Park Centre and to integrate seamlessly with the regional Mills Park. Originally designed by Hodge Collard Preston and constructed by PACT in 2016, the Mills Park Centre is notable as Australia’s first 6 Star Green Star public building. In order to accommodate the new library, a number of building modifications were required including the removal of walls, relocation of services and creation of a new air lock entrance. Close consultation between the architect, project manager and library service delivered the following design outcomes:
- Distinct activity areas, including a children’s area, tech zone, general library collections and quiet study spaces through the use of flexible furniture and shelving as natural dividers/barriers;
- A library that is accessible to all;
- Maintaining the building’s 6 Star Green Star status. Emulating the original specification ensured that the surrounding envelope and carbon footprint was not negatively impacted by the modifications;
- Complementing the existing building and its surrounds. The existing colour palette of the Mills Park Centre reflects the City of Gosnells’ corporate brand. A similar colour palette was used throughout the new library with paint colours and furniture items selected to complement the existing facility.
- Modernising the library. Provision of more digital technology and private study space were key project deliverables. Replacement of traditional shelving with moveable shelving, provision of a digital returns shelf, doubling the provision of public PCs and inclusion of smart pod furniture ensured that a functional, vibrant and modern space was accomplished.
