Previously, the physical design was sterile, institutionalized, and disjoined, failing to meet user-friendly standards. However, the refurbishment has turned it into a visual delight. The new design is flexible better catering to student needs, offering a warm and welcoming ambiance with a coherent flow. Additionally, improved technological features enhance the overall experience.

Comments

The recent refurbishment of our library was a transformative endeavour, addressing several key aspects to enhance user experience and sustainability. Some key design characteristics included: Shelving Upgrades: We revamped the existing shelving units by adding wheels for flexibility. Now, rearranging the space is a breeze. The introduction of oak end panels and canopies not only adds a touch of elegance but also ensures durability. Front-Facing Shelving and Wall Displays: To engage users and showcase materials effectively, we incorporated more front-facing shelving. This allows easy browsing and promotes interaction. Wall displays serve as focal points, highlighting featured books, events, and educational content. Flexible Furniture: Our furniture choices prioritize flexibility. Modular seating, movable tables, and adaptable couches make the space constantly updatable. The goal was to create an environment that evolves with user needs, encouraging collaboration, quiet study, or group work. Circulation Desk Relocation: We strategically moved the circulation desk from its previous “in-your-face” position to a more unobtrusive location. This change enhances the flow of the library, reduces visual clutter, and provides a welcoming entry point. Self-Checkouts: Embracing technology, we introduced self-checkout stations. Users can independently borrow items, streamlining the process. This not only improves efficiency but also assists with bottlenecking at the circulation desk when multiple classes come to borrow. Durability and Sustainability: All design elements were chosen with durability in mind. From sturdy shelving, robust furniture, and the colour scheme, we aimed for longevity. Additionally, we considered the carbon footprint. Sustainable fabrics, energy-efficient lighting (in the junior end), and responsible waste management contribute to a greener library. Our refurbished library now embodies warmth, flexibility, and functionality—a space where students and the community alike can thrive.
