Comments

The space brings the external environment inside with a focus on WA flora, natural timbers and reflection spaces. The timbers are Australian (Jarrah and Blackbutt) and have been chosen to create areas of difference but also to tie areas together with the appearance as one space. Kaarla Mia, meaning homefires in Noongar, is at the heart of the refurbished space. Kaarla Mia incorporates elements of the Boorna Baronga cultural reflection space outside the library representing all Noongar nations in Western Australia. The lighting represents the night sky and the ability to always find our way on whatever journey we may be on. The home-fire circle which emulates a circular fire pit has been placed on an orange/red carpet to reference the idea of the fireplace. The main thoroughfare across level 2 of the library has been designed to feel connected and welcoming. The space is now not seen just as a corridor to get from one side of the building to the other, but as a transitional space where the flow has been slowed but not impeded. The modern minimalist design allows the focus to be on key elements. The aim of the informal and transitional space design also focuses on entwining virtual and physical learning environments with collaborative spaces, high tech screens and displays, whiteboards, increased access to tables with powerpoints, comfortable booths and improved accessibility through furniture such as sit stand desks. A wave screen behind the main Library enquiry desk is an integral part of the intuitive way finding of the design. The main points for student help are all designed with elements of this way finding such as materials, floor features and ceiling features, helping to guide students without the need for signage. We also introduced innovative touch screen maps and large digital screens to enable self-help.
