Comments

Opened in September 2018, the new Devonport Library occupies two floors for contemporary library services, programs, collections and meeting room spaces, and is an excellent example of the successful co-location of government services. The Libraries Tasmania sub-tenancy accounts for approximately 1400 square metres of space on the ground and first floors, including the library’s public floor areas, meeting rooms and back-of house areas.

Located over two levels, the library features large expanses of clear glass to foster a sense of connection with neighbouring historic buildings, the city centre and the Devonport waterfront beyond. Inside, light-filled interiors provide natural wayfinding for visitors, together with generous provisions for bring your own device (BYOD) and designated areas for children and families, young adults, researchers and learners of all ages. Lyons’ clever design of the library’s spaces enables mobility, flexibility and welcoming side-by-side (and COVID-19 safe) interactions between library clients, staff and volunteers, including in this unprecedented year and time of changing community needs.

The flexibility of the library and wider building meeting room design is another of the centre’s merits. Meeting rooms and common property spaces on all levels have been cleverly configured to maximise public access to rooms during the day, evening and on weekends. Smart, integrated hydronic in-slab heating ensures Tasmanian winters are no barrier to the comfort of paranaple clients, staff, volunteers and visitors too.
