The Burton Community Hub is an outstanding new multipurpose facility which operates within an integrated service model consisting of a community garden, workshop, library and community programs area. It provides a wide range of innovative cultural, learning and recreational opportunities.

Comments

The Hub’s internal and external areas are designed to be attractive and inviting to our diverse community, which is home to nearly 100 different countries, and make them feel part of the Salisbury community.

To create a sense of belonging, a 4 x 4 metre welcome graphic greets everyone with the word ‘welcome’ in over 70 languages spoken in our community, including Kaurna. The project prioritised 3 improving environmental sustainability initiatives and key outcomes, which better the project’s imprint and reduction of carbon foot print and included:

  • utilisation of the City’s recycled water network for irrigation throughout the site • new solar power system was incorporated into the design
  • ESD Initiatives in the design In developing the building concept and layout, the architects have considered best practice design principles as well as input from Council, staff and existing user groups as follows;
  • Develop a cost-effective building that is functional, attractive and welcoming to its users
  • Create a design that caters to the needs of the community allowing co‐location of services which operate independently under the one roof.
  • Provide social areas, office and committee spaces, kitchen facilities, and storage for gear and equipment.
  • Create spaces and an environment (including outdoor areas) that encourage utilisation.
  • Maximise safety and security through design and lighting.
  • Minimise the building footprint where practical and maximise the open space.
  • Improve lines of sight to the passive recreation areas.
  • Upgrade irrigation systems, including automation and weather station monitoring to improve and reduce wasted watering times
  • Provide outdoor spaces for community use

The success of this project is founded on integrating design process and service planning, informed by community inputs. The community’s vision represented in the Burton Community Hub resulted in developing such a great place, enjoyed and treasured by the community.
