Janette Burke

University Librarian
University of Tasmania

Janette has been at the University of Tasmania for 4 years, having moved from Monash University Library after 16 years in various leadership roles. She has also worked at several regional libraries including, South Australia TAFE, University of Central Queensland, University of Ballarat (now Federation University) and the University of Wollongong. Janette has led and been significantly involved in major refurbishments and new library buildings in Tasmania, Victoria, Malaysia, and South Africa.

She is currently responsible for seven libraries in Tasmania and was instrumental in the design and opening of a new library this year, showcasing commitment to scholarship, lifelong learning, creativity, culture, and community engagement. Interweaving and creating spaces for first nation stories, art and cultural collections has been an important addition to the new Library. Included in Janette’s portfolio is the University of Tasmania’s cultural collections and galleries. One of her priorities is to enable the discovery of, and access to, the State of Tasmania’s cultural collections with GLAM partners in the State. Embedding print, electronic, and cultural collections into the curriculum along with information, digital, research and cultural skills is a key service provided by the Library and Cultural Collections team.

Janette has been an ALIA judge for the Library Design Awards for the last 2 years.
